Bipolar Support for Families and Partners

Guidance for partners, parents and friends on communication, practical help, consent, boundaries and planning professional support together.

Support the person, not just the diagnosis

You may be trying to understand a recent diagnosis, prepare for a difficult conversation or help someone already receiving care. Begin by asking what would be useful to them. Practical help can be offered without assuming that you must take over treatment decisions or become the only source of support.

Describe concerns without arguing about labels

Choose a calm moment where possible. Use specific observations and a direct offer: you have noticed a change in sleep, missed commitments or distress, and would like to help arrange a conversation with a professional. Listen to the person’s account. Avoid trying to settle a diagnosis through a disagreement about whether their behaviour is normal.

Agree the role of each supporter

Discuss who can help with transport, appointment preparation, children, household tasks or communication. Being a partner, parent or payer does not mean that every clinical conversation should include you. Ask the service to explain consent and confidentiality arrangements, including how you can share a concern even when the clinician cannot disclose details in return.

Plan before a difficult period

A shared crisis plan can record preferences, professional contacts and the agreed steps when concerns increase. It should be developed with the person and the clinical team. If there is immediate danger, use emergency support rather than attempting to negotiate a private admission alone.

Your wellbeing matters too

Identify someone you can talk to and what you can realistically offer. You can be caring while setting boundaries about safety, money or communication. The partner guide includes practical questions, while our resources section offers preparation tools that do not require an enquiry.
